Margate has more people working out of a room than the housing statistics suggest. A studio is not a spare bedroom with a desk in it — it is a working space, and the things in it are not furniture.
What this changes
There is work in progress, and it is the part that cannot be replaced. Finished pieces can be packed properly; half-finished pieces frequently cannot be moved at all without being damaged, and that has to be decided before the day rather than discovered on it.
Materials, tools and work are three separate problems. Materials are heavy and dull. Tools are heavy and valuable. Work is light and irreplaceable. Loading them as one pile is how studios get wrecked.
Studio buildings are awkward buildings. Old industrial units, converted shops, upper floors over businesses and shared blocks with a single goods door and no lift are all common here, and access dictates the plan.
Downtime is the real cost. A studio that cannot be worked in is a week of income, which is why the sequence — what goes last, what arrives first — matters more than the speed.
What we do about it
Walk the studio with you and agree what we move, what you move, and what genuinely should not be moved at all
Crate or case work in progress properly, or tell you plainly that it should travel with you
Load so the things you need to start working again come off the van first
Handle solvents, resins and anything flammable by telling you we cannot carry them, in time for you to make other arrangements
The catch
We will not carry solvents, resins, gas or anything else on the prohibited list, and no amount of good will changes that. Tell us early and it is a non-event; tell us on the day and it is a problem.
